New Zealand Shopping

It may be a relatively small island nation in the South Pacific, but New Zealand has a wealth of world-class shopping to tempt you, from malls to markets, unique designer boutiques to classic souvenir shops. Whether you’re after a sheepskin rug, a stunning piece of jewellery made from carved Pounamu (greenstone), a hot new designer outfit fresh off the catwalk or some official All Blacks merchandise, you can easily return home with a suitcase full of South Pacific treasures.

Shop 'til you drop

Save some room in your suitcase! For a country with a relatively small population, New Zealand offers an abundance of tempting boutiques and galleries packed with high-quality goods.

The ubiquitous tourist shops are always on hand with their New Zealand flags and chocolate Kiwis, and they’re a great source of easy-to-pack gifts, but explore a little further and you’ll find wonderfully unique arts, crafts, homeware and fashion.

International-style shopping malls are in all of New Zealand’s main centres, and boutiques and galleries can be found anywhere from the city centre to country lanes well off the beaten track.

At the renowned Arts Centre in Christchurch, galleries and working studios are clustered together in a series of beautiful heritage buildings, making it an irresistible place for browsing.

Markets are another place to find special gifts and unique mementos – the weekend market at the Christchurch Arts Centre and Aotea Square Market in Auckland are two of the biggies, but there are many others to discover.

Most shops open from 9am to 5pm on weekdays, as well as more limited hours on weekends. Credit cards are widely accepted at larger stores, with smaller shops almost always accepting EFTPOS (debit card) transactions and, of course, good old-fashioned cash!
