Planes, Trains & Automobiles

The variety of New Zealand's landscapes will have you feeling like you’re entering a new world at every turn, but distances are manageable compared to those on the continents.

Driving

Drive on the left and keep to the speed limits - 50kph (30mph) in urban areas and 100kph (60mph) on the open road. With strict laws on drinking and driving the best advice is simply ‘don’t drink and drive’.

Car Rental

You’ll find car rental offices at airports, ferry terminals and city depots. When travelling between islands, some companies allow you to pick up a new car on the other side of Cook Strait, saving you on ferry fares. All intending drivers need to hold a valid licence.

Motorhomes & Campervans

Campervans can be driven just about anywhere in New Zealand. Book in advance if you are travelling during the high season, and advise your hire company if you are travelling between the North and South Islands in case of special offers.

Motorcycle Hire

New Zealand is a great place for motorcycle touring – provided you are well prepared for the changeable weather! With a valid motorcycle licence, you can hire anything from a little 50cc ‘nifty-fifty’ to a big 750cc touring motorcycle.

Public Transport

New Zealand has an extensive network of air, train, coach services and ferries. As well as convenient, New Zealand public transport is also relatively inexpensive.

Airlines

Daily domestic air services connect most of New Zealand’s cities and large towns. Visit the Qantas and Air New Zealand websites for fares and bookings.

Coach Tours

Knowledgeable drivers and guides will help you get the most out of your travel experience and may be able to offer good package deals including accommodation and meals.

Ferry Services

The Interisland Line offers daily services across Cook Strait, linking New Zealand’s North and South Islands. Other scheduled ferry services link the mainland to Stewart Island, as well as various islands in the Marlborough Sounds and Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf.

Taxis

There are metered taxis in all cities, towns and resort areas. Taxis cruise the busy downtown areas in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Elsewhere you may have to find a taxi rank or phone for one.

Trains

The TranzAlpine, which crosses the Southern Alps between Christchurch and the West Coast town of Greymouth, is a popular excursion with an international reputation.
