Go west … and explore a corner of New Zealand where the down-to-earth rhythms of rural life take place in a landscape that’s out of this world.

Spectacularly beautiful, Taranaki is a region of lush rural landscapes, amazing surf beaches and a perfect cone-shaped mountain – Mt Taranaki. This region is perfect for an inspiring road trip. Meander along winding river gorges and quiet highways splashed by surf under the gaze of the mountain. The Forgotten World Highway from Stratford to Taumarunui is one of New Zealand’s most secluded trails and an exciting opportunity for adventure. New Plymouth offers excellent accommodation and dining, as well as galleries and boutiques. Escape to another world in Taranaki.

DO IT. Take a road trip on the Forgotten World Highway, go surfing at spots along Surf Highway 45, join a Maori guide and climb Mt Taranaki, visit the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, watch an outdoor concert at TSB Bowl of Brooklands, celebrate world music at WOMAD in March.

Getting there and around

Air New Plymouth Airport, 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of town, offers daily flights to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
Road New Plymouth is 5 hours, 15 minutes from Auckland and 5 hours, 5 minutes from Wellington (via SH 3). Several bus companies provide regular services between New Plymouth and other North Island centres. SH 43 from Stratford to Taumarunui is an alternative route to Taranaki – the Forgotten World Highway is picturesque, but it is remote, so ensure that your petrol tank is topped up beforehand. SH 45 – Surf Highway 45 – offers an alternative drive south from New Plymouth. It is a slightly longer route than SH 3, but is a great way to explore Taranaki’s long curve of coastline.
