Startling contradictions abound in a region encompassing the natural beauty of the Whanganui River and the innovative works on show at a fine contemporary art gallery.

From high in the rugged hills of Whanganui National Park, where the Whanganui River begins its long journey, to the charming historic town of Whanganui nestled between river and sea, this region invites you to get off the tourist trail and create your own authentic New Zealand experience, whether it’s a canoe journey on a sacred river or an afternoon at one of Australasia’s top contemporary art galleries. In the Whanganui River Valley the mysticism, scenery and limited human presence will transport you to a state of relaxation and peaceful rapport with nature as you surrender to the beauty of the landscape and the spirit of the sacred Whanganui River. A strong Maori and European history is embraced within the region, reflected by the preservation of heritage buildings and marae.

DO IT. Canoe down the Whanganui River Browse the renowned Sarjeant Art Gallery Hike in Whanganui National Park Drive or cycle the Whanganui River Road Ride the historic Durie Hill Elevator See native birds in a protected forest reserve at Bushy Park Fish for trout in the pristine Whanganui River headwaters.

Bridge to Nowhere

Between 1935 and 1936, a bridge was built to access a planned new settlement deep in Whanganui National Park. But the location proved too remote and when the venture was abandoned the forest closed in, leaving only the Bridge to Nowhere as a haunting monument.
