Discover New Zealand’s second-largest city and explore a surrounding landscape that is packed with adventure activities of every description.

New Zealand’s second-largest city is also one of its most beautiful, known for the brilliant colours of its parks and gardens, and the tranquil river that winds its way through the central city. The Christchurch earthquake of 22 February 2011 damaged some of its famous Gothic revival stone buildings, but the city is still a worthwhile destination and a great base for experiencing Canterbury and the South Island. Earthquake damage was very localised and many parts of the city are operating as usual. In fact, the bars of Merivale and the shops of Riccarton are busier than ever. Most visitor activities are also operating as usual, so there’s still plenty to do. Make sure your stay allows enough time to head out of town and explore the countryside; from the hills and harbours of Banks Peninsula and French-flavoured Akaroa to the country town of Methven with its fishing, golfing and skiing.

DO IT. Ski at one of many regional ski areas, hike a trail in Arthur’s Pass National Park, mountain bike on the Port Hills, glide down the Avon River on an Edwardian punt, go white-water rafting on a Canterbury river, enjoy the tranquillity of a hot air balloon flight.

The heart of the city

Christchurch’s beautiful Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park are still the heart of the city – never more so than now. North Hagley Park will become a temporary ‘events village’ in time for the Rugby World Cup 2011 in September.
