Steve Carr: Chasing the Light
Until 10 February 2019
A spectacular and immersive new project by Christchurch-based artist Steve Carr. In a darkened gallery, six large-scale video projections explore the poetics of an explosive display and register the transformation of fire into smoke. Cameras chase the action from multiple viewpoints, placing the viewer in the middle of a beautiful and bewildering night-time adventure.

Philip Trusttum: Just a Glimpse
Until 28 April 2019
Exuberant and boisterous, these large paintings by Philip Trusttum will lift the spirits. Now into his sixth decade working as a painter, Trusttum is one of Christchurch’s most respected artists. In 2009, just prior to the Canterbury earthquakes, he generously presented ten paintings to Christchurch Art Gallery and this year allowed the Gallery to select a further five paintings for the city’s collection. Trusttum is known for his large, high-energy paintings, often inspired by everyday life. In these works he responds to his immediate surroundings, painting objects such as his grandchildren’s toys on a grand-scale alongside works that deal with living in post-quake Christchurch.

Juliet Peter: Where the Line Leads
Until 20 January 2019
New Zealand painter, printmaker and potter Juliet Peter (1915–2010) was a keen observer of character and place. From the rural Canterbury farms on which she grew up and later worked as a wartime land-girl to bustling 1950s London, and later the bush-clad, bird-filled suburb of Ngaio, Wellington, where she lived and worked for much of her life, she depicted the world around her with delightful candour.
