New Zealand Opera have certainly established a rep for creating can’t-miss visits to the theatre with their productions in recent years, and their upcoming winter production looks like it will fit right into this tradition. From June 22 to July 22 in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch they’re performing Carmen, Bizet’s sumptuous and hit-filled paragon of the operatic form, with what will no doubt be all the requisite splendour, opulence and passion this opera essential deserves. Georgian opera sensation Nino Surguladze (pictured) stars in the titular role, teaming up with a number of other national and international opera stars and director Lindy Hume for what will be a sexy, sensual take on the 142-year-old classic.
