Bars & Pubs

New Zealanders like nothing more than a killer drink and a banging venue to drink it in, which means you’re pretty much spoilt for choice when it comes to finding swanky digs to knock back a few medicinals. The New Zealand bar and nightlife scene encompasses everything from sophisticated urban nightclubs to unique and quirky country pubs.

In the main centres you’ll find as cool-as-ice (literally, in the case of ice bars in Auckland and Queenstown) lounge bars perfect for a sophisticated evening over a few top-shelf cocktails, live music venues where you can dance the night (and much of the morning!) away, and craft beer pubs with a sideline in bodacious bar snacks, while smaller centres and the countryside offer gastro-taverns and pubs where the local hospitality is legendarily welcoming, with some so Kiwi they’ve become attractions in themselves – one simply does not drive past the likes of the Cardrona Hotel near Wanaka, the Lake Mahinapua Hotel on the West Coast or the Duke of Marlborough in Northland’s Russell without stopping in for a pint and a chinwag!
