From Manawa Ridge’s turret-like viewing room is a scene akin to a kingdom stretching as far as the eye can see. With 360 degrees of stunning hill country, Pacific Islands and coastal vistas, you can indeed feel like King or Queen of all you survey. To the North West the hamlet of Waihi sits quaintly at the foot of the rugged Kaimai Ranges, and on the south east horizon Mt Maunganui appears as if you could just reach out and pluck it.
This eco friendly retreat is an artistic balance of old beams, mud bricks and straw bale walls. Indeed this has all the durability of a hill-fortress ... albeit a very luxurious one ... designed and built by its owners, Willem and Carla.
Manawa Ridge has three individually designed units, each with an open fire, underfloor heating, extra long Californian king size beds, plus spa baths in private gardens.
Explore the 250 acre property by foot or try one of the black Friesian horses; the temperament of this old European breed is calm and dependable. Willem will pass on all his expertise (professional horse-riding lessons in horse arena). If art is your passion, you are welcome to create your own sculpture out of very workable volcanic rock. Carla is our artist on site.
Together with organic grown veggies and meat, and the specially built underground ‘wine cave’, guests are in for a sustaining and sustainable visit.
From its sky-high turret to its solid construction, polished concrete floors, exotic furniture, rugs and artifacts, Manawa Ridge is indeed New Zealand’s answer to a ‘Castle on the hill’.
