For back-to-basics camping, the Department of Conservation (DOC) operates more than 250 vehicle-accessible campsites around New Zealand. They can be very basic; some have only long-drop toilets and streams for water. On the up-side, you can often stay at these sites for free and many are set in unique wilderness areas. Other DOC campsites are more comfortable, with hot showers, and you’ll pay a small charge to stay.
