Self-contained New Zealand motels, motor inns and motor lodges are great for self-catering, independent travellers and range from studios and one- or two-bedroom units to suites. They are also ideal for families and often provide wheelchair access. Parking is generally free of charge. Motels offer full kitchens or kitchenettes, often have patios, terraces and balconies, and your motel bathroom may include a spa bath. In bigger motel complexes you can also expect to find communal facilities such as laundries, gardens, swimming pools, playgrounds and saunas.
Most motels, motor inns and motor lodges are serviced daily. They are owner-operated and are usually located close to local amenities such as restaurants and shops. Although you’ll find motel accommodation in city centres, a great proportion of motels are located in suburbs and along driving routes, which makes them a cheaper accommodation option around high-priced cities such as Wellington.
The Motel Association of New Zealand (www.nzmotels.co.nz) is a network of over 1,000 self-contained motel accommodation providers, and chains such as Golden Chain Motels offer accommodation passes.
