If you’re here for a Working Holiday, you might want to open a New Zealand bank account, as most employers will want to pay your wages directly into a NZ bank account. To open a bank account you will need your passport as identification.

New Zealand banks are generally open during working hours (9:30am till 4:30pm) from Monday to Friday, except on public holidays. However, many Kiwi banks run branches in malls and along main shopping streets which may have extended opening hours and may also open on Saturdays.

Major New Zealand banks include BNZ, ANZ, National Bank, ASB, Westpac, Kiwibank and HSBC, and ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines) are widely available. If you need to check or calculate exchange rates, BNZ offers information on about 30 currencies. Note, however, that the currency exchange rate you’re offered at home is likely to differ slightly.
