If you choose freedom camping it’s vital that you stick to the freedom camping etiquette! Freedom camping is increasingly frowned upon and prohibited in many places due to freedom campers littering the beautiful New Zealand environment. Make sure you’re not one of them and help keep New Zealand beautiful by sticking to some simple rules. Most importantly, freedom camping is only permitted if you have a fully self-contained campervan with toilet, shower and grey water storage. Even then, camping is prohibited in some places – if there’s a sign saying ‘no camping’ then find another spot. Never, ever leave rubbish behind and ensure that you always have bin bags at the ready. Don’t pollute rivers and lakes with shampoo or soap – use your onboard shower instead – and never use the great outdoors as a toilet! When freedom camping, keep the noise down and don’t annoy the locals – this is their backyard, after all.
