Cook Strait

  • nz information

The journey between the North and South Islands is a stunning scenic cruise showcasing the stunning Marlborough Sounds. Watch out for wildlife such as dolphins, whales and fur seals!

The body of water separating New Zealand’s North and South Islands is called Cook Strait. In order to cross Cook Strait you’ll have to take a plane or ferry.

Ferries cruise between Wellington in the North Island and Picton in the South Island. The 92-kilometre journey takes little more than three hours and there are two ferry providers, Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferry and Interislander. Both ferry companies depart several times daily, carrying vehicles and offering various on-board amenities such as the latest movies, viewing platforms, lounge bars, work stations and food courts.

Web saver prices start from as low as NZ$45 per adult and NZ$200 for two adults and a car or small campervan. Student and same-day excursion concessions are sometimes available, as are family fares. While Bluebridge, the smaller operator, can be slightly cheaper, Interislander offers more daily departures. With Interislander you also have the opportunity to book a deluxe ticket which gives you access to a comfortable lounge with complimentary newspapers, magazines, drinks and snacks.

If you’re travelling by New Zealand rental car, many car hire companies allow you to drop off your vehicle on one side of Cook Strait and pick up another rental car on the other side to save you the cost of transporting your vehicle.
