Save some room in your suitcase! For a country with a relatively small population, New Zealand offers an abundance of tempting boutiques, markets and galleries packed with high-quality goods and specialty souvenirs.

The ubiquitous tourist shops are always on hand with their New Zealand flags and chocolate Kiwis, and they’re a great source of easy-to-pack gifts, but explore a little further and you’ll find wonderfully unique arts, crafts, homeware and clothing.

You’ll find international-style shopping malls in all of New Zealand’s main centres, usually with a supermarket attached. Souvenir shops are easy to find and usually clustered around attractions or in downtown areas. Boutiques and galleries can be found anywhere from the heart of the city to country lanes well off the beaten track – keep your eyes peeled as you drive to your destination, because deep in the countryside are some wonderful art and craft galleries. At the renowned Arts Centre in Christchurch, galleries and working studios huddle up in a series of beautiful heritage buildings, making it an irresistible place for browsing. Hidden treasures abound along Kerikeri's renowned Art & Craft Trail, while fashionistas flock to downtown Wellington or Auckland's Ponsonby. Markets are another place to find special gifts and unique mementos and there are many to discover. Farmers markets offer fresh local produce, from farm fresh eggs and quality homemade breads to fine goatsmilk cheeses.
