If you’re like me and want to unwind with a glass of wine amongst one of New Zealand’s most beautiful landscapes, then Vintners Retreat just out of Blenheim in the heart of Marlborough is the perfect place to stay. Nestled on Rapaura Road, alongside world-class wineries and boasting outstanding views of the Richmond Range, these villa-style apartments don’t disappoint.

I had the pleasure of spending a couple of nights in one of Vintners’ recently refurbished villas (thanks to Martin and Shulah, who are great hosts). Although the design is simple, it works. There is ample space in the living area, consisting of a modern, open-plan kitchen, dining part and lounge. Large windows allow for plenty of light and the sliding doors open straight out onto the spacious patio with your own barbeque area – perfect for the long summer days to come! And even on a crisp winter’s day, the sun streams in and creates a warm haven where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the views.

Night-time is romantic. The inviting bedroom captures the landscape in the fading sun through the large window, and a new king-size bed with upmarket linen is heaven after my spa bath. A highlight for me was the selection of lavish Molton Brown skincare products (Vintners Retreat is one of only six properties in New Zealand which stock Molton Brown of London!) to indulge myself in – what a treat!

The villa is equipped with all the modern amenities. Having washing facilities and internal garage access is definitely a bonus! On site, there is a solar-heated swimming pool, tennis courts and pétanque area.

Being amongst New Zealand’s world class wineries is an absolute drawcard for Vintners Retreat. It’s a handy location, so definitely worth taking a wine tour! I sure sampled my way through a range of Marlborough wineries while cycling along the idyllic country lanes of the Renwick Cycle Route! Hosts Martin and Shulah will happily recommend local highlights and Marlborough restaurants if you ask them. My personal favourite of the region is a Sauvignon Blanc from Saint Clair Winery in Selmes Road not far from the gorgeous Vintners Retreat.

Finally, Vintners Retreat is only ten minutes from Blenheim Airport and 30 minutes from Picton (arrival point for ferries crossing the Cook Strait from Wellington). With Renwick Village nearby and the stunning Marlborough Sounds just around the corner, what more can you ask for when looking for the perfect weekend getaway?!
