Good news for all snow enthusiasts: the 2010 winter season is not over yet and you already have a great event to look forward to next year. It has been announced that the 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games will be held from 13 August to 28 August 2011.
The Winter Games, which is the first winter sports event of its kind outside the Winter Olympics and the first to combine adaptive and able-bodied alpine athletes, features 16 days of snow and ice sports. It will attract over 1,000 skiers, snowboarders and ice sport athletes from all over the world. In 2009, 17 Olympic and Paralympic medallists, including the entire men’s snowboard halfpipe podium had previously competed at the inaugural 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games!
The 2011 Winter Games will feature the two new skiing events Super G and Adaptive Super G to be held at Mt Hutt near Christchurch, and the Winter Triathlon to be held at Snow Farm Ski Area. The latter will also host the adaptive and able-bodied cross country. Other alpine skiing highlights will take place at Coronet Peak, while Cardrona Alpine Resort is scheduled for the freeski and snowboard halfpipe and big air plus the snowboard cross and ski cross racing. Snow Park NZ will be the focus for snowboard and freeski slopestyle, while Dunedin and Naseby are going to be the ice sports centres.
