The winners of the 45th APRA Silver Scrolls Award were announced at Auckland’s Town Hall last night. APRA (Australian Performing Right Association) is an organisation representing all New Zealand music writers and the APRA Silver Scroll Award is New Zealand’s most prestigious song writing award. In 2010 Alisa Xayalith, Thom Powers and Aaron Short of The Naked and Famous have taken out the top award with their song Young Blood. Anthony Healey of APRA says: “Young Blood is outstanding; it’s stroppy, it’s youthful and energetic. It makes me want to be 18 again. [...] Tonight’s winners have given us music to treasure and we applaud them.”
Other awards presented last night included the APRA Maioha Award which celebrates contemporary Maori music and was won by Jamie Greenslade aka maitreya with Sin City, and the SOUNZ Contemporary Award which recognises creative excellence by a contemporary composer and was won by Chris Cree Brown with Inner Bellow.
Previous winners of the APRA Silver Scroll Awards have been famous Kiwi song writers such as Neil Finn, Scribe, Dave Dobbyn and Chris Knox.
