It’s a much-adored annual meeting of fast-paced sevens rugby action and crazy costumes; yes, the Hertz Sevens is back to rock New Zealand’s capital city this weekend. One of eight HSBC Sevens World Series rugby tournaments held every year, the Wellington event has a reputation for huge (and hugely enthusiastic!) crowds – most of whom come bedecked in costumes from the impressive to the downright weird. It’s an event not to be missed – honestly, you don’t even have to be a rugby fan to thoroughly enjoy it!
Sevens is a unique variation on rugby union that is fast and intense. With just seven players on each team, everyone must bring their ‘A’ game! Keep an eye out for rising stars during the tournament, because many top sevens players go on to become international rugby stars – Victor Vito and Cory Jane are two local examples.
This weekend, 35,000 fans will fill Westpac Stadium for two days of rugby and entertainment. Even outside the stadium, the atmosphere in Wellington City will be electric. So even if you’re not heading to the games, make sure you make the most of events around the city, which kick off today with the Hertz Sevens Street Parade at midday.
If you do have tickets, get to the stadium early to make the most of the entertainment programme. Here’s the lowdown:
