As the week of this year’s ASB Queenstown JazzFest comes closer, more and more jazz stars put their names down for a performance. It has just been announced that the Brazilian legend Marku Ribas and Batucada Sound Machine will play at Queenstown’s major springtime event which is to take place from 21 October till 25 October 2010.

The performances will add to the JazzFest’s blend of flavours and music genres from around the world. “This year we’re excited to present two related but distinctly unique concerts that explore different elements of Latin jazz,” says chair Luke Baldock. “Both performances by Marku and Batucada combine African and Brazilian rhythms and music styles that break the boundaries from the traditional style of jazz into classical harmonies, contemporary beats and soulful melodies.”

Marku Ribas will make his festival debut at Millbrook’s The Millhouse on Saturday 23 October, fusing rhythms from Brazil and the Caribbean with jazz elements, while Batucada Sound Machine will play at the ASB Jazz Club on Sunday 24 October. The 13-man band will be joined by the eight-piece funk band Humlai, embracing Pacific Soul, funk, reggae, dance and hip hop. Luke Baldock says: “If there’s one chance to cut loose on the dance floor and enjoy a musical extravaganza at the festival, then this is it.”
