If you were lucky enough to wake up in Waikato today you probably saw a sky dotted with dozens of hot air balloons! You’re a late riser? No worries, you get a second chance to see the mass ascension this afternoon from approximately 5pm. To kick-start the 2011 Balloons over Waikato event, which takes place from today until 3 April, more than 30 balloons will inflate and fly from Hamilton's Innes Common once more.
The 2011 Balloons over Waikato event is jam-packed (or should we say inflated?) with heaps of events. Tomorrow, several balloons will create a magical glow in the sky as the sun rises at the Breakfast at Dawn event. On Friday, the Balloons over Waikato Parade will travel along Hamilton’s Victoria Street, and on Saturday the ASB Nightglow Festival features live music, the orchestrated Balloon Glow Show and fireworks. On Sunday it all finishes with the final day of competitions and the crowning of the Balloon Champion 2011. The official 2011 Balloons over Waikato website has all the details and info you need. If you're planning on visiting the region over the weekend, we've got plenty of Hamilton accommodation options to choose from.
Not in the Waikato region but feel like an adventure high up in the air now? Well, there are plenty of options all over New Zealand. Go on your very own hot air balloon flight, soaring into the sunrise with a glass of bubbles and, better even, surprise that special person!
