The American Express Queenstown Winter Festival is by no means the only winter party in New Zealand. Down south, Dunedin will put on a big Midwinter Carnival on Saturday 25 June.
The Dunedin Midwinter Carnival will kick off at 5:30pm to celebrate the longest night of the year. The party will take place at Dunedin’s heart, The Octagon, and with 10,000 spectators expected, it will be huge. The theme of the 2011 Midwinter Carnival is Night Creatures so Dunedin’s streets will be illuminated by awesome weta, owl, moon and star lanterns.
As a fashion hub, Dunedin will of course also feature some local designs in the Midwinter Carnival 2011. Watch out for costumes created by local fashion designers! Performance highlights, on the other hand, include Brazilian drumming, African dancing and stiltwalkers.
If you’re heading down to Dunedin for the Midwinter Carnival 2011, don’t forget to have a good look around Dunedin at daytime, too. From historic buildings such as New Zealand’s only castle, Larnach Castle, to designer boutiques and wildlife encounters around the Otago Harbour and Peninsula, Dunedin has so much to offer that it’s best to make a weekend of it.
