Good news for Christchurch’s event scene: one of the year’s mega events to be held in Christchurch will go ahead as planned. On 30 July 2011 Christchurch’s CBS Canterbury Arena will host the second ice hockey game of the International Ice Hockey USA vs Canada series.

The promoters of the International Ice Hockey USA vs Canada series, which brings the biggest hockey games New Zealand has ever seen to the country, have announced that all three games of the series will go ahead as planned, including the one scheduled for Christchurch! The CBS Canterbury Arena (alongside many other lucky businesses) escaped the earthquake unscathed and so the International Ice Hockey USA vs Canada event will go on. Event promoter Craig Douglas says: “It’s not about making money, it’s about giving the people of Christchurch our support and giving the city and residents back some energy and excitement.”

And exciting it will be: the event is going to be a real American ice hockey experience including extreme lighting and sound, big-screen tellies, action replays, flame throwers, top entertainment and live American commentators. The ice floor will arrive by boat all the way from the Netherlands! The other two events of the series are played in Auckland’s Vector Arena (23 July 2011) and Dunedin’s Ice Stadium (3 August 2011).

So the ice hockey proves it: Christchurch’s event scene is still alive (and rocking!). If you want to be part of it, get in and buy your tickets here. There’s no reason to be concerned about Christchurch accommodation for the big ice hockey game. With 95% of Christchurch motels being operational, there are about 1,900 motel rooms to choose from alongside all those boutique hotels, B&Bs and camping grounds that survived the earthquake unscathed and are safe and sound.
