It’s the biggest sporting event ever held in New Zealand, and Rugby World Cup 2011 is gripping the nation with drama on and off the Rugby field. The highlight of Rugby World Cup 2011 so far – for those of the female gender – would undoubtedly be All Blacks star Sonny Bill Williams having to change a torn Rugby shirt midfield during the opening game! Is there any finer specimen of manly physique taking part in this tournament? Well, to be fair, watching the All Blacks haka is a veritable feast of eye candy, don’t you think?! Ladies, if this isn’t motivation enough to get your hands on (no, not a shirtless Sonny Bill Williams!) Rugby World Cup tickets, we don’t know what is!
Game-wise, it’s wonderful to see so many of the newer Rugby nations making a real match of their clashes against more fancied opponents. After a strong start in their opening match, in which they gave the French team, Les Bleus, a bit of a fright, Japan may just sneak up on Richie McCaw, Dan Carter and the rest of the All Blacks team on Friday night. Perhaps it has something to do with the number of Kiwi exports amongst both players and coaches. Of note are Wallaby coach Robbie ‘Dingo’ Deans and exceptional first five Quaid Cooper, Wales coach Warren Gatland and Japan coach John Kirwan. Surely we should be counting these Rugby elite among our more valuable exports, particularly if any are involved in a win against local favourites the New Zealand All Blacks!
Fortunately the referees don’t seem to have played too big a part in results to date, but Wales may beg to differ on this point. Were they robbed of a significant win over the World Champion Springboks when match officials decided a penalty goal did not pass between the uprights? Much debate has been raging on this point! But what is an international tournament without controversy? So far Rugby World Cup 2011 is no exception and New Zealand is loving this feast of exciting Rugby! Check out the Rugby World Cup schedule here and get your hands on a ticket!
Rugby World Cup 2011 dates: 9 September – 23 October 2011
