Yesterday we broke the news that the Royal New Zealand Ballet will stage the classic ballet The Sleeping Beauty in 2011, but there is more to come!
Altogether, the Royal New Zealand Ballet will present four new ballets! A highlight is certainly a show with the working title Scenes de Ballet. Part of the Stravinsky Triple Bill season, where dancers are pushed to their physical limit by performing thirty minutes of pure dance and minimal stage design in three dramatically contrasting ballets, the costumes for Scenes de Ballet will be created by renowned New Zealand designer Karen Walker! The other two works of the Stravinsky Triple Bill season are Russian classic Petrouchka and Milagros. Stravinsky Triple Bill will be performed in Wellington (20 – 22 May 2011), Auckland (25 – 28 May 2011), Hawke’s Bay (31 May – 1 June 2011), Christchurch (4 – 5 June 2011) and Invercargill (8 – 9 June 2011).
The Royal New Zealand Ballet’s famous biennial TOWER Tutus on Tour focuses on families in the next year. The classics Pinocchio and Verdi Variations will be performed in over 40 New Zealand cities from February through to April 2011. For dates of the Tutus on Tour ballets, click here.
Royal New Zealand Ballet GM Amanda Skoog says: “There’s no doubt 2011 will be a huge year for the company.”
