The month of May is not only the time for the New Zealand International Comedy Festival and the famous Bluff Oyster & Southland Seafood Festival – it’s also NZ Music Month. This means literally hundreds of gigs throughout New Zealand, many of which are free to attend!
Since the first NZ Music Month was celebrated a decade ago, the profile of homegrown music has been raised significantly, with Kiwi music being played on the radio much more than a decade ago and sales steadily increasing.
Nowadays, New Zealand music is part of every great New Zealand roadtrip as the radio provides the ideal soundtrack for the stunning landscapes you pass by. And the gigs which are part of the NZ Music Month are just as varied as the New Zealand scenery. You’ll find everything from new release parties and jam sessions to metal concerts, Maori songs, rock gigs and music events for kids.
There are hundreds of gigs all over New Zealand and you can find all the details on the official NZ Music Month website. So make sure you sample this important part of Kiwi culture and head to some of the events!
