Looking for something special to do on the first winter weekend 2011? How about the Waiheke Winter Arts Festival on Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf? It’s on this weekend (4 – 5 June) and a great chance to go behind the scenes of artist studios while indulging in seasonal island gourmet goodies. The Waiheke Winter Art Festival is on from 10am till 4pm on Saturday and from 10am to 3pm on Sunday.

Buy your ticket and festival map for just $25 from the Waiheke Community Art Gallery, the Waiheke i-SITE Visitor Information Centre or the Fullers ticket office at Matiatia and discover galleries and artist studios independently. A highlight is the artisan craft market Craft Plus 2011 at the Morra Hall on Sunday 5 June. Open from 10am till 3pm, the market is a treasure trove for designer crafts! And don’t forget to browse the Fullers Reclaim to Fame exhibition at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery which will be on until 13 June.

You can also book a Waiheke Winter Art Festival Tour from Auckland. Catch the 10am ferry from Auckland for an exciting day tour, visiting ten artist studios and take the 4pm boat back to the city. Tour tickets (exclusive of Waiheke Winter Art Festival tickets) are $35.

And why not combine the festival with a long weekend’s island escape? There’s lots to do on Waiheke Island, from winery tours, vineyard lunches and biking to relaxing beach walks or yacht charters, there’s something for all interests and budgets. Waiheke accommodation options range from backpacker hostels and cosy B&Bs to self-contained beach accommodation and luxury lodges.
