When thinking about Fiordland, world-famous New Zealand scenery, unique New Zealand wildlife and relaxing holidays spring to mind. But Fiordland also deserves an award for its local people! Over the last two weeks the tiny community of Milford Sound have put their heads together and raised almost NZ$3,000 to support fellow Kiwis in Christchurch!

Milford Sound’s Blue Duck Café and Bar held a charity event raising NZ$2,253 with live music and auction prizes from Skyline Queenstown, Southern Discoveries, AJ Hackett, Star Dome Te Anau, Real Journeys, Milford Sound Lodge and Mitre Peak Lodge. On top of that the Blue Duck Café and Bar staff have generously donated their entire tips from March! Southern Discoveries Operations Manager Ross MacDonald says: “The girls and guys in Milford Sound have done fantastically well to raise this kind of money.”

And the destination-nz.com team definitely agrees; we say thumbs up for the local Fiordland spirit! And there are some more reasons why we love Fiordland, especially right now:
1. The autumn fog that shrouds the mystical valleys and occasional storms make Fiordland boat cruises even more spectacular!
2. The settled weather and smaller visitor numbers during autumn make a hike in Fiordland National Park wonderfully solitary and rejuvenating.
3. The upcoming Routeburn Classic run will be a great excuse to head down to Fiordland and cheer for the 350 competing athletes.
4. The lower temperatures make for awesome Fiordland mountain biking, which is a great preparation for the 2011 New Zealand ski season.
