Last night, nearing the end of a long drive from Christchurch down to Invercargill in Southland, I found myself on the scene of a backcountry car accident. Parked back along the road with my hazard lights on to warn the approaching traffic, I waited while the scene was cleared. An hour later I was back on the road, but the delay meant I'd be arriving at Ascot Park Hotel after the swimming pool was closed - and right then a swim was just what I needed! A quick phone call to the Ascot Park reception to explain the situation and the staff told me not to rush; I was welcome to use the pool whenever I arrived. Sure enough, when I did finally get to Invercargill, the pool was open just for me - a perfect example of why Southland is famous for its Southern hospitality!
