MOMENT IN HISTORY
In the 1850s, Waikato Maori formed the Kingi Movement and waged war against European settlers. The first King was elected in 1858 and one of his descendents, Tuheitia Paki, is the current Maori monarch. His official residence is at Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia.
