NOTABLE CULTURE
It’s hard to imagine as you cycle between wineries on the Wairau Plains, but in 1843 this was the setting for a bloody skirmish between Maori and Pakeha. A conflict over dubious land deals led to the deaths of 22 settlers sent to arrest the Maori chiefs Te Rauparaha and Te Rangihaeta in an event known as the Wairau Massacre.
MOMENT IN HISTORY
In 1642 Dutch explorer Abel Tasman spent five days sheltering his ship off D’Urville Island – the first European to visit the region.
THE ICONIC EXPERIENCE
Watch dolphins ride the bow-wave as you cruise the waterways of the Marlborough Sounds on your way to a wilderness retreat.
