Delight in exploring a myriad of pretty waterways, pristine native forest and internationally renowned wineries in a very special corner of New Zealand.

From the lush forests and quiet inlets of the Marlborough Sounds to golden plains criss-crossed with grape vines further south, Marlborough is a region blessed with natural abundance and a wide range of activities. Bathed in sunshine, it invites exploration year-round; whether your tastes run to the thrills of diving around a shipwreck and swimming with dolphins or the more laid-back but equally exciting pleasure of trying to choose a favourite among the more than 100 wineries in New Zealand’s largest wine-making region. Gateway to the South Island for visitors catching an inter-island ferry from Wellington, it’s the perfect place for an utterly indulgent escape.

DESTINATION-NZ.COM HIGHLIGHTS

Take a break from your paddling and let your kayak float as you absorb the beauty of green-fringed coves under a blue sky in the Marlborough Sounds. Hoist your backpack onto your back and leave civilisation behind as you walk the Queen Charlotte Track. Experience the thrill of a backcountry adventure with a four-wheel-drive tour of historic Molesworth Station in the Awatere Valley.

NOTABLE CULTURE

It’s hard to imagine as you cycle between wineries on the Wairau Plains, but in 1843 this was the setting for a bloody skirmish between Maori and Pakeha. A conflict over dubious land deals led to the deaths of 22 settlers sent to arrest the Maori chiefs Te Rauparaha and Te Rangihaeta in an event known as the Wairau Massacre.

MOMENT IN HISTORY

In 1642 Dutch explorer Abel Tasman spent five days sheltering his ship off D’Urville Island – the first European to visit the region.
