Did You Know?

During the nineteenth century, visitors from all over the world came to see Rotorua’s Pink and White Terraces, regarded as the world’s eighth wonder. The terraces were formed as water containing silica flowed down from the boiling geysers at the top down the hillside. The water cooled and crystallised into giant terraced natural staircases, with waterfalls and pools of warm clear blue water used for bathing. The terraces were destroyed by the massive Mt Tarawera volcanic eruption in 1886.
