Meaty facts

In colonial New Zealand, sheep meat was so abundant that it was even substituted for traditional roast goose! The so-called Colonial Goose was stuffed leg of lamb or mutton, shaped to look like a bird.

New Zealanders' love of meat actually stems from the desire of the early European settlers to cast aside the class system so central to British society. In nineteenth century Britain meat was a high-status food, eaten only in small amounts by the lower classes. So in New Zealand, where meat was readily available, eating a great deal of it was a way of subverting old class limitations.

Little more than a generation ago, on the standard NZ dinner plate typically resided a generous quantity of meat and a selection of vegetables such as potato, carrot and peas, all well boiled! Thankfully, the last few decades have seen a major change in the way New Zealanders cook and eat, and now a typical New Zealand household is far more likely to eat an evening meal of stir fry or pasta.
