Lord of the Rings and more…

Watch Some Kiwi Films

It’s not all Lord of the Rings in New Zealand! Check out these modern classic and cult classic Kiwi movies to give you an insight in our nation’s cinematic culture.

Eagle vs Shark
(2007)
If you liked Napoleon Dynamite you’ll love this geek-meets-geek New Zealand love story, starring Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords.

Sione’s Wedding
(aka Samoan Wedding) (2006)
Urban romantic comedy set in Auckland about first generation Samoan New Zealanders.

The World’s Fastest Indian
(2005)
Anthony Hopkins is legendary and cantankerous Kiwi Burt Munro, who made an epic trip in the 1960s from Invercargill to Utah to set a world land speed record.

Whale Rider
(2002)
A story of love, rejection and triumph as a young Maori girl fights to fulfil a destiny her grandfather refuses to recognise.

Stickmen
(2001)
Slick, stylish and funny film in the Lock, Stock… tradition following three kiwi blokes as they try to win a high stakes pool tournament run by sadistic crime boss ‘Daddy’.

Bad Taste
(1987)
Peter Jackson’s film debut is a gross-out comedy about an alien fast-food franchise, and includes brain eating and exploding sheep.

Goodbye Pork Pie
(1981)
Anarchistic cult-classic road movie following a group of eclectic individuals driving the length of New Zealand in a stolen Mini.

Hollywood Down Under

In recent years film-makers have caught on to New Zealand’s charm, and its wealth of talent and technical innovation. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed in New Zealand and directed by New Zealander Peter Jackson. Computers helped create some of the effects, but the scenery was all natural – a number of operators offer tours to sites featured in the films.

There are also many distinctly New Zealand stories told on film. Whale Rider is a haunting tale based on a story by Witi Ihimaera, examining Maori culture and myth, while The World’s Fastest Indian tells the story of Southland motorcycle legend Burt Munro.
