CITIES
New Zealand’s cities are culturally diverse, cosmopolitan and definitely worth exploring. Make sure your trip includes exciting Auckland, the cultural heart of Wellington, pretty Christchurch, and historic Dunedin.
CLIMATE
New Zealand enjoys a temperate climate that features four distinct seasons but does not usually suffer major extremes. Ensure you prepare for a changeable climate as it’s not uncommon to experience the four seasons in just one day! In summer, average maximum temperatures range between 20 and 30°C and in winter between 10 and 15°C. The seasons occur in reverse of Northern Hemisphere seasons. For current weather information see
www.metservice.co.nz.
CLOTHING
The weather is changeable so layering is the key to staying comfortable. Always keep a sweater handy and carry a waterproof jacket in case of rain. If you’re visiting during winter months, or exploring alpine areas, bring warm clothing including gloves and a hat. Smart casual clothing is acceptable in most situations. There are no specific cultural issues to consider.
FOOD
Don’t leave New Zealand without sampling some of the local delicacies on offer around the country, including fresh oysters and seafood, succulent lamb and premium wines. See the Food, Wine & Shopping section for more information.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
New Zealand is one of the world’s safest destinations, but basic safety precautions should be taken. Take care when hiking into remote areas and ensure that you are appropriately equipped for the conditions. See the Walking & Hiking section for further advice.
New Zealand’s medical facilities operate to a high standard but services are not free, so ensure you purchase comprehensive travel insurance.
New Zealand has a relatively low crime rate, however it is recommend that you take sensible precautions such as keeping valuables out of sight and locking doors and vehicles, even in remote locations.
In health and safety emergencies, dial 111 for ambulance, police or fire services. Doctors, dentists and 24-hour surgeries are listed in regional telephone directories.
HOLIDAYS
Confirmed bookings, especially for accommodation, vehicle rental and Cook Strait ferry sailings, are a good idea if you’re travelling during public or school holidays when tourist destinations become busy. Some establishments, such as cafés, may charge a holiday surcharge of 10% to 20%.
