Seasonal Travel

New Zealand is a year-round destination. At any time of year you’ll be able to get outdoors and enjoy the activities that make New Zealand famous – but each season has its highlights!

Spring

During spring (September to November), New Zealand’s gardens put on a fantastic show of blossoms and bulbs, making it a great time to visit Taranaki, Hamilton or the ‘garden city’ of Christchurch. Or hit the slopes in early spring for some of the best skiing of the season!

Summer

Summer (December to February) is high-season, so crowds will be larger – but crowds are rarely big enough to be a real problem. This time of year is perfect for exploring the beaches and enjoying watersports in areas like the Bay of Islands, The Coromandel, Nelson and Marlborough.

Autumn

In Autumn (March to May), summer crowds disperse but the weather usually remains settled and warm, making this a great time to visit. In parts of the country the changing colours of the leaves are a spectacular sight – grape vines look particularly stunning, so enjoy lunch at a vineyard and sample the latest vintage.

Winter

Winter (June to August) is the perfect time for a ski or snowboard holiday, but even off the slopes New Zealand is a great wintertime destination. Crisp, clear days make it a great time to appreciate the majestic scenery in regions such as Otago and Fiordland, while southern centres like Dunedin and Queenstown look all the more picturesque under a dusting of snow.
