Planning Tips

Deceptive distances

Although New Zealand is a relatively small country, distances are longer than they may appear on a map. You cannot, for instance, comfortably travel between Queenstown and Auckland in a day – even Queenstown to Christchurch is a long drive. Because roads may be steep, narrow or winding, driving in New Zealand requires careful concentration. When planning itineraries, allow plenty of time for rest breaks along the way – a perfect excuse to stop and admire the scenery!

Looking for signs

Around New Zealand are a number of themed touring routes or scenic highways which are signposted to make navigation easier. For further regional options visit the nearest i-SITE Visitor Information Centre in New Zealand or refer to the relevant regional website (listed on destination-nz.com within the regional sections).

Getting between the islands

The North and South Islands are separated by a body of water called Cook Strait. There is no bridge or tunnel, but there are several ferry services for passengers and cars. Whenever possible, book ferry journeys well in advance as sailings fill up quickly, particularly during New Zealand Public and School Holidays. Flights across Cook Strait are also available with Air New Zealand and Sounds Air.
