Accommodation

Finding inexpensive accommodation is relatively easy in New Zealand. Of course, backpacker hostels are a popular choice for budget travellers. From dorm rooms to private rooms complete with bathrooms, hostels suit a wide range of people from individuals to families.

Hostels are increasingly well equipped: as well as kitchens, many have internet facilities, TV lounges, barbeques and even swimming pools. Styles range from clean but simple to shared facilities that are extremely comfortable indeed. And many hostels enjoy a great location, central to entertainment and services.

An excellent option for solo travellers wanting to socialise with fellow travellers along the way, hostels are also perfect for couples and families who want to save on accommodation costs. As always, look for the Qualmark logo: the Qualmark Backpacker category rates hostels and budget hotels on a scale of one to five stars. Also check out Budget Backpacker Hostels of New Zealand (www.backpack.co.nz) – a network of budget accommodation providers offering a Club Card with guaranteed prices for members and other discounts.

Camping is another excellent option for budget travellers. A hugely popular summer pastime for New Zealanders, camping is a great way to save money and enjoy a quintessential Kiwi experience. Whether you’re renting a campervan in New Zealand or sleeping in a tent, you’ll find camping grounds offering a good standard of facilities and a pleasant setting. But it’s not all camping at camping grounds! Many also offer great value cabin, chalet or motel accommodation.

Popular camping grounds that have been enjoyed by generations of Kiwis are often set in prime natural locations, such as beside a beach or lake. Landscaped grounds, often with a playground and sometimes even a swimming pool, mean they are perfect for families. Facilities range from a basic shared kitchen, bathroom and laundry, to a superb standard at great value. If you’re thinking of checking-in to a camping ground, look for the Qualmark Holiday Park category to help you choose.

To find out more about camping grounds in New Zealand, contact Holiday Accommodation Parks of New Zealand (www.holidayparks.co.nz) or Top 10 Holiday Parks (www.top10.co.nz). If you’ll be staying at multiple camping grounds, consider a Top 10 Club Membership. For NZ$30 you’ll enjoy a 10% discount on all Top 10 Holiday Park accommodation plus discounts at selected restaurants and activities.

Camping Gear

Camping in a tent is a truly Kiwi experience! It’s also great value, but you will need some equipment. Tent Dome styles are easy to set up, look for one with a rain-fly and mesh panels for ventilation. Foam or air mattress Don’t forget a pump for the latter! Sleeping bag Graded for different seasons and available in down or synthetic. Cooking equipment Pots, pans, can opener, plates, cups etc. (official camping grounds usually have a kitchen). Lighting Take a torch for late-night trips to the bathroom and a lantern so that you can read. Towel It’s strictly BYO (Bring Your Own). Try outdoor stores such as Kathmandu or Bivouac Outdoor, buy second-hand gear for extra savings or rent your equipment.

Quality at a great price

Qualmark New Zealand is New Zealand tourism’s official quality agency – and it’s not just for high-end accommodation. There are categories for all kinds of accommodation, including Self Contained and Serviced (motels, apartments and holiday cottages), Holiday Home, Holiday Park and Backpackers. Grades range from 1-5 stars for all styles.

All accommodation that has been awarded a Qualmark has undergone a detailed assessment to ensure that it meets a minimum level of requirements in cleanliness, security and comfort. That means even operators with a low number of stars under the Qualmark grading system offer accommodation that is basic, clean and comfortable.
