When it comes to eating on a budget, don’t restrict yourself to the familiar fast-food chains! New Zealand offers a superb array of reasonably-priced cafés and restaurants that will satisfy your taste-buds without breaking the bank. Or you can save even more money by self-catering; there’s plenty of big supermarkets where you can purchase all kinds of food and grocery items at good prices.
Be aware that convenience stores or ‘camp shops’ in remote resort areas are often more expensive than their city counterparts, so it may be a good idea to stock up on supplies before leaving town. More fun than a supermarket, shopping at a farmers’ market or roadside market gardens can be good value. Some roadside stalls offer bags of seasonal fruit with an 'honesty box' alongside in which to leave the payment – don’t short-change them, think karma!
Even if you choose to cut costs on day-to-day expenses, allow a little extra in your budget for the occasional splurge; whether it’s sampling a glass of fine wine while overlooking the vines, buying a box of handmade chocolates in the Wairarapa or sitting down to an exquisite feast of fresh seafood at a quayside restaurant, superb cuisine is an essential part of the New Zealand experience!
