Go for a walk

Incredible scenery and pristine fresh air are free of charge in New Zealand, and walking is a great way to experience this outdoorsy country.

New Zealand has a huge range of scenic outdoor areas with walking trails to explore. It's essential to plan properly before setting out on a walk. We suggest you follow these recommendations:

Get advice on current and predicted weather conditions.

Don’t walk alone, and register your plans at a DOC office.

Stick to the track – protect fragile plants, and yourself, by not wandering off-track.

Wear a good pair of hiking boots that support your ankles.

Take warm, waterproof clothing – the weather can change quickly.

Carry plenty of water and drink it to avoid dehydration – water from streams must be purified by boiling for at least three minutes or by using chemical purifiers.

The sun can be strong even if the weather is cold – wear high-protection sunscreen.

Take a first-aid kit with something to soothe blisters.

Carry gear in a backpack that fits comfortably.

In rugged terrain, preparation may save your life. Seek advice from the Department of Conservation or an outdoor equipment retailer on clothing, food and emergency gear. See www.mountainsafety.org.nz.
