Fly down fresh powder in New Zealand’s southern ski fields
New Zealand is the ultimate destination for skiers and snowboarders, offering a staggering variety of experiences against a backdrop of dramatic alpine scenery.
A southern hemisphere setting means that New Zealand’s seasons occur in reverse of northern hemisphere seasons, with the ski season usually running from June to October. This means that visitors can indulge their love of snow sports in America and Europe’s off-season, with a good snow base and warmer temperatures making spring skiing in New Zealand a big draw.
There are fields for downhill skiing and snowboarding, a cross-country ski area and terrain parks for snowboards. Slopes are generally less crowded than those on the continents and lift queues are shorter. Larger fields offer dedicated areas for learners; those with more experience will love the challenges available. For extreme skiers and snowboarders, New Zealand is the ultimate destination. For thrill-seekers, heli-skiing is another unique activity to experience.
Renting or purchasing good quality equipment is easy in cities and ski resorts. Most ski areas also rent gear on site.
If you are heading out to the slopes, you can check conditions before you leave. The latest weather forecasts for the mountain areas are available at

And when you need a break from the slopes, you’ll find plenty of other activities, from a soak in a hot pool to a jet boat ride.
