South Island

New Zealand’s South Island is the larger of its two main islands and has a population of just under 1 million people, or approximately one quarter of the entire population of New Zealand. The terrain in the South Island varies greatly from region to region. Lush wet rainforests and rolling hills and plains are divided by the backbone of the Southern Alps. You’ll find beautiful beaches and waterfront areas throughout the South Island, from the sandy seaside in the north and east to the wild fiords of the southwest.

South Island highlights include the white sands and turquoise waters of Abel Tasman National Park, vineyards and wineries in Marlborough, Fox and Franz Josef glaciers on the West Coast, alpine thermal resort town of Hanmer Springs, towering fiords in Milford Sound, coastal wildlife along the east coast and on Stewart Island, and the major cities of Christchurch, Dunedin and the adrenaline capital Queenstown.

Paddle your sea kayak along a beach paradise or among towering fiords, tour a myriad of wineries and savour Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Central Otago Pinot Noir, walk on ice as you explore a glacial landscape, soak in hot mineral pools while surrounded by forested mountains, meet seals, dolphins, whales and penguins up close in the wild, be thrilled by adventure activities that get your adrenaline pumping, sip a coffee at a boutique café while you plan your next adventure – New Zealand’s South Island beckons you to come and play.
