Mount Ruapehu is home to New Zealand’s two largest ski areas, Whakapapa and Turoa, and provides a unique skiing experience in that it is an active volcano and part of a dual World Heritage Area. Whakapapa is the largest ski field in the country and is home to arguably the nation’s premiere beginners’ area, Happy Valley, as well as more than 30 groomed trails that intermediate skiers and boarders love, and for the more adventurous, 24 black and black diamond runs and the lift-accessible Black Magic backcountry area. It also offers all the amenities of an international ski resort, including great dining at New Zealand’s highest café( at 2,020 metres), the Knoll Ridge café.
