Transport

There are plenty of options for getting around New Zealand – self-drive with a rental car or campervan, hit up coach companies that connect main centres with smaller towns, or join a specialist bus tour operator or take a scenic train journey (the Tranz Alpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth on the West Coast is consistently rated as one of the world’s best train trips). Public transport will get you around the main centres. Ferries connect the North and South and some smaller islands and some popular coastal hot spots, and water taxis provide easier access around many of the country’s most popular destinations. Domestic flights will save you travel time – book as far in advance as possible for the cheapest deals.
