Mount Lyford is New Zealand’s first true alpine development, ideal for rest and relaxation or carving up the slopes. On the field itself, uncrowded slopes make Mt Lyford a great option for beginner skiers and boarders, while a variety of intermediate terrain is available, as well as advanced skiing and riding in the Terako Basin. The Wild Ride Terrain Park, set up in its own basin, has a natural terrain chute lead in, and plenty of jumps and rails, as well as excellent half and quarter pipes. Near the lodge, the renowned International truck jump (over an old 1956 International tow-truck) always sees plenty of action every year, and there’s even a tubing area for slipsliding fun on the slopes. Full equipment rental is available on the field, as are group and private ski and snowboard lessons. The field’s well-utilised ‘Never Ever’ package offers a complete setup for first-time skiers or boarders. You can refuel and resupply from the Chamois Café, or put your feet up for a while in the Terako Day Lodge. Accommodation options on and near the field include Mt Lyford Lodge, log chalets in the Mt Lyford Village at the bottom of the access road, or well-equipped alpine cabins dotted around the area, and if the weather is keeping you off the slopes, nearby Kaikoura and Hanmer Springs offer a host of alternative activities!
